Toe and the measurement units
Toe describes whether wheels on an axle point slightly towards or away from each other when viewed from above. Total toe refers to the combined measurement for the axle, not a target to apply independently to each wheel. Degree-and-minute notation uses 60 minutes per degree; it is not decimal degrees.
Setting tolerance and check limits
The setting tolerance defines the permitted variation around the adjustment target. The bracketed range shows that target plus and minus its tolerance. Check limits are separately recorded inspection limits; do not confuse them with the setting range. The manufacturer’s procedure determines whether adjustment is required.
When to have alignment checked
Uneven tyre wear, an off-centre steering wheel or a change after an impact can justify an inspection. Alignment differs from wheel balancing, and worn steering or suspension parts can affect the result. The technician must use the correct vehicle preparation and measurement procedure. A front-toe listing does not supply missing camber, caster or rear-toe settings.
