Car Battery Terminal Size Chart

Compare common T1, T2, T4-F and T4 battery terminal types before choosing or fitting a replacement battery.

Check more than the battery case size. A replacement can fit the tray but still have the wrong terminal diameter, polarity or layout for the vehicle.

Checks to Make Before Fitting

Terminal size is only one part of battery compatibility. Confirm all of the following before ordering or installing a battery.

01

Terminal position

Check which side the positive and negative terminals sit on when the battery faces you.

02

Terminal type

Compare the terminal shape and diameter so the cable clamps can make a secure connection.

03

Case and hold-down

Confirm the battery dimensions, overall height and the correct base or securing arrangement.

04

Battery specification

Match the required technology, capacity and cold-cranking rating for the vehicle.

Polarity and cable reach matter.

A battery with the terminals in the opposite position may leave the vehicle cables unable to reach safely. Never stretch, cross or force battery cables into place.

What if the terminals look similar?

Do not assume they are interchangeable. Small differences in size or layout can prevent a secure connection and may cause starting or charging problems.

Does terminal orientation matter?

Yes. Batteries with the same case dimensions can place the positive terminal on opposite sides, making one version unsuitable for the vehicle.
