What aquaplaning is, why standing water can make a vehicle lose grip, and how tyre condition, pressure and driving speed affect the risk.
What is aquaplaning?
Aquaplaning, sometimes called hydroplaning, happens when a tyre cannot clear water from beneath its contact patch quickly enough. A layer of water can build between the tyre and road, reducing or temporarily removing the grip needed for steering, braking and acceleration.
What increases the risk?
Standing water, higher vehicle speed, worn tread and unsuitable tyre pressure can all make it harder for a tyre to clear water. Road ruts can also collect water and create deeper patches across the carriageway.
What should you do if the vehicle aquaplanes?
- Stay calm and avoid sudden steering movements.
- Ease off the accelerator smoothly rather than making an abrupt input.
- Avoid heavy braking while the tyres have little grip.
- Keep the steering as steady as possible and allow the tyres to regain contact with the road.
Tyre condition matters
Tread channels are designed to move water away from the contact patch. As tread depth reduces, the tyre has less capacity to deal with standing water. Correct inflation also helps the tyre maintain the shape and contact area intended by the manufacturer.
