Choosing the correct caravan tyres
Caravan tyres should be suitable for the wheel size, load carried and inflation pressure specified for the caravan. The correct replacement is not always determined by tread size alone, so it is important to check the full tyre specification and the caravan manufacturer’s guidance before fitting.
Load rating matters

Use the correct pressure
Caravan tyre pressures can be much higher than normal car tyre pressures. Use the pressure specified for your caravan and tyre setup rather than guessing or copying the tow car pressure.
How old should caravan tyres be?
Caravan tyres often cover relatively low annual mileage, so age-related deterioration can become important before the tread is worn out. Long periods standing in one position, exposure to sunlight and weather, and repeated loading can all affect tyre condition.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club recommends replacing caravan tyres when they reach five years old and says they should never be used when more than seven years old. Tyres requiring high inflation pressures need particularly careful inspection as they age.

Caravan tyre checks before a journey
- Check the tyre pressures when the tyres are cold and use the correct caravan specification.
- Inspect both sidewalls for cracking, cuts, bulges, impact damage or signs of perishing.
- Check tread condition and look for unusual wear or a tyre that appears out of shape.
- Confirm the tyre size and load rating are suitable for the caravan.
- Check the tyre age, especially if the caravan has been stored for a long period.
- Do not forget the spare wheel if your caravan carries one.
Looking after caravan tyres during storage
If a caravan is standing for long periods, inspect the tyres regularly rather than waiting until the next trip. Where practical, protect tyres from prolonged direct sunlight and avoid leaving them under unnecessary load in exactly the same position for extended periods. Always follow the caravan manufacturer’s guidance for long-term storage and lifting.
Before returning the caravan to the road, check tyre pressure, condition and age carefully. If you see cracking, deformation, bulges or other damage, have the tyre assessed before towing.
