Where is the tyre date code?

The manufacturing date forms part of the markings moulded into the tyre sidewall. The full date code may appear on only one side of the tyre, so on some vehicles it can face inwards and be harder to see.

What do the four digits mean?

For modern tyres, the first two digits identify the week of manufacture and the final two digits identify the year.

For example, a code of 1121 means the tyre was manufactured in the 11th week of 2021.

Does tyre age matter?

Yes, but age should be considered together with the tyre’s actual condition and how it has been stored and used. Tyres can deteriorate through heat, sunlight, under-inflation, overloading, long periods standing and other operating conditions.

Inspect older tyres carefully for cracking, deformation, damage and changes in the rubber. Tread depth alone does not tell you whether a tyre is in good condition.

Caravans, motorhomes and low-mileage vehicles

Tyres on caravans, motorhomes, trailers and vehicles that cover very little mileage can age before the tread wears out. Regular inspection is particularly important because long periods standing can mask age-related deterioration.

What about very old three-digit date codes?

Tyres manufactured before 2000 may use older three-digit coding systems. A tyre old enough to carry that style of date code is now extremely old and should be professionally assessed rather than treated as suitable simply because tread remains.
