What Is a Directional Tyre?

A directional tyre has a tread pattern designed to rotate in one specific direction. The tread often forms a V-shaped or arrow-like pattern that helps channel water away from the tyre’s contact area.

Why Does Rotation Direction Matter?

The tread channels are designed to work as the tyre rolls forward. If a directional tyre is mounted to rotate the wrong way, its water-clearing design cannot work as intended and wet-weather performance can be reduced.

How Do You Identify a Directional Tyre?

Look on the sidewall for a rotation arrow and wording such as Rotation. When the tyre is fitted to the vehicle, the arrow should point in the direction the tyre turns when the vehicle moves forward.

Directional Tyres and Aquaplaning

Directional tread patterns are commonly designed with strong water evacuation in mind. The open channels help move water away from the footprint, which can support wet grip and reduce the risk of aquaplaning. Tyre pressure, tread depth, vehicle speed and standing water still have a major effect.

Can Directional Tyres Be Swapped Side to Side?

Not without considering the direction of rotation. A wheel and tyre assembly moved to the opposite side of the vehicle may cause the tyre to rotate backwards unless the tyre is removed from the wheel and refitted correctly.

Check the arrow: If you are unsure whether a directional tyre is fitted correctly, look for the rotation arrow on the visible sidewall and compare it with the wheel’s forward direction of travel.
