What is tyre pressure?

Tyre pressure describes the pressure of the air inside the tyre. In the UK it is commonly shown in PSI or bar. Correct pressure helps the tyre carry the vehicle load, maintain its intended contact with the road and operate as designed.

Where do I find the correct pressure?

Use the vehicle manufacturer’s specification, not the maximum-pressure figure moulded into the tyre sidewall. Depending on the vehicle, the recommended pressures may be shown on a label inside a door opening, fuel-filler flap, handbook or vehicle information system.

Many vehicles specify different pressures for normal use and for a heavily loaded vehicle. Follow the appropriate setting for the load and tyre/wheel combination fitted.

How often should pressures be checked?

Check them regularly, including before longer journeys, and include the spare wheel if the vehicle has one. A tyre can lose pressure without looking obviously flat.

Why check tyres cold?

Tyres warm up in use and the pressure rises as their temperature increases. Manufacturer pressure recommendations are normally based on cold tyres, so checking before the vehicle has travelled far gives a more useful comparison with the specified setting.

What if I cannot find the correct pressure?

Do not guess from vehicle weight or copy the pressure from a vaguely similar car. Check the handbook/pressure label, our vehicle index, or contact the vehicle manufacturer/dealer for the correct specification.

What if the tyre has been driven flat?

A tyre that has supported the vehicle while severely underinflated can suffer hidden internal damage. Reinflation alone does not establish that it is safe. Have the tyre inspected before returning it to service.
